So many times at work I seem to show up at the very moment someone needs help. They say what a coincidence – I was just about to call you. I always laugh and reply God’s timing is always perfect.
To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heavens. Ecclesiastes 3:1
The Hebrew word for Season is Z@man (Zem-awn) and it means a set time or appointed time.
To God things don’t just happen by coincidence. Coincidence is something that happens by chance. But God has planned everything to happen at an appointed time. He knows every step we will take, every word we will speak and even every thought we will have.
Knowing all this, God has set things to happen when He is ready so events work together in order to fulfill His purpose.
Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way? Proverbs 20:24
A great example of this is something that happened to a person I know. Her son was given an electric guitar for Christmas and when she was trying to tune it, one of the strings broke. She laughed because she couldn’t believe the string had broken, after all it was brand new. The next day she took it to a guitar dealer not far from her house and while she was waiting for the guitar to be fixed and tuned, a person in the store started talking to her. She usually does not talk to people she doesn’t know, but this time she did, sharing scriptures together. She said it was an awesome experience. She said it was like the Lord standing in front of her because she had never before felt so inspired, so elated, so completely at peace talking to a person she had never met before. But it is when he said something to her that others had been telling her and she wondered how he could know?
I told her that maybe God put her at the store and put that person at the store to give her encouragement. He wanted her to know that she had a purpose and that she should not be afraid because He would be there every step of the way. But maybe she was put there so God could work through her to give him the encouragement he needed, or maybe it was for both of them. Unless she talked with him later she will never truly understand how he felt after the experience. I explained that we can’t always understand why things happen, but God does. He has a purpose for everything and will place you where you need to be, when you need to be there to serve a purpose for Him.
I also shared with her something that the Lord taught me many years ago. In the book of Genesis, Joseph’s brothers had done evil to him, wanting to get rid of him because of their jealously. He showed me that many people only see the bad that was done to Joseph, or they only see that Joseph helped out the people of Egypt, but what they don’t see in this story is that God planned the steps of what Joseph’s brothers did so that Joseph would be placed where God needed him to be, when he needed to be there in order to save many lives. As Joseph said to his brothers “God meant it for good.” (Genesis 50:20)
Though we can not completely understand why God allows things to happen when they do and we don’t always see everything that comes from them, we can keep the word of God in our hearts and always understand that God has a time and a purpose for everything that happens and that it is always meant for good.
