Tame That Tongue!

But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessings and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way. Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water? Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh. James 3:8-12

Blessing and cursing is the difference between walking in the Spirit and walking in the flesh. We can not tame the tongue, but we can ask the Lord to give us the words to speak. If you are truly a child of God, then only blessings should come forth. You can not say you love God if you don’t love your brethren.

Cursing is not just saying “I hope this happens to someone”. Cursing includes such things as saying ‘Blondes are dumb, Men are idiots, Fat people…, Old people…, Little people…, Young people… White people…, Black people…, Tall people…, Short people…”

Most people think of these as jokes, and a good spiritual people would not take offense to it, but if a blonde child grows up always hearing “blondes are dumb” what do you think that child will think of themselves when they grow up? Truthfully you won’t know, only God knows. But put yourself in that child’s shoes for a moment. Would you want to feel you are dumb until you came to the understanding that it is only a joke?

What of the person who feels they are worthless and you speak such a thing over them? You do not see their heart when you speak and you could be hurting them greatly. What if it is an unsaved person whom you have hurt and it causes them to reject the Lord because they think Christians are just hypocrites?

All people are God’s people and God doesn’t care what color hair a person has, or what color skin they have, or how tall they are or how old they are. God loves each and every one. We are to be united, not divided, yet we divide each and every day.

Why not speak blessings over people instead? Most don’t do it because they don’t consider it funny. They consider it funny to degrade and curse people for some reason.

We should love one another and build each other up. I challenge each person reading this to take a look at the things you say and to start blessing others and stop cursing.
