Say to all the people of the land and to the priests, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months these seventy years, was it actually for Me that you fasted?’ Zechariah 7:5
This is part of a rebuke from God to the people. They were insincere in their fasting and sacrifices. They did it not because they loved God, but because of their selfish desire to “appear” to be doing the right thing.
Many people today go to church, sing, pray and tithe, because they are supposed to and they want to appear as good Christians, but their heart is not in it. They do it out of their own selfish desire and not because they love God.
But they are only fooling man; God knows a man’s heart and can not be fooled. God knows if you do something out of love for Him and a desire to glorify Him. The word of God says we should test ourselves. So I ask you today to test yourself and ask yourself this question. Do you worship, serve, pray and tithe because you love God or do you do it just because you are supposed to or because you need to puff yourself up? Search your heart and see if you are doing things because you love the Lord or if you are doing it out of your own selfish desire.
