But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. James 3:17
The wisdom from above is wisdom we seek from the Father, which He will give to us to help us, guide us and direct us.
The word pure in Greek is Hagnos (hag-nos’) and it means exciting reverence, venerable, sacred, pure from every fault, pure from carnality, chaste, modest and clean.
Wisdom from God is first pure. When I saw this, my first thought was well that is because it is from God – untouched by man. And that is true because God is perfect and can not lie, so any word from God would be perfect and untainted. It is the world which taints the word of God.
The word Greek word for peaceable is Eirenikos (i-ray-nee-kos’ ) and it means relating to peace, peaceable, pacific, loving peace, bring peace with it, peaceful, salutary.
Someone once told me you can always tell God’s wisdom because it will always show the way to have peace. God is a god of peace and not a god of chaos. He will never guide you in a way which is not acceptable and creates stress or division. God’s wisdom comes to us pure and undefiled and if we use it correctly it will always lead to peace.
The next word given is gentle. I was reminded of the story of Elijah (1 Kings 19:9-21) on a mountain. He was seeking God. While He was there a great wind, an earthquake and a fire came by, but the Lord was not in any of those things. Then there was a gentle blowing and he knew that was God. So many people look for God in all the big, huge events that happen, but they never listen for that gentle voice of the Lord. When God is giving wisdom it will be gentle, not harsh and we need to listen carefully for it. Call it God’s way of helping us focus on what is important and taking the focus off what is not important.
God’s wisdom is always reasonable. Reasonable in Greek is Eupeithes (yoo-pi-thace’) and it means easily obeying, compliant
God makes it very simple for us to obey the wisdom He gives us. He doesn’t desire us to fail, but to succeed. He will never cause us to have stress through His wisdom, but peace.
God’s wisdom is full of mercy. When I looked up the word mercy it said ‘kindness or good will towards the miserable and the afflicted, joined with a desire to help them.’ God has an awesome desire to help us to reach the goal.
God has an awesome desire to help each and every one of us so we succeed. God’s mercy toward us is just astounding. It was by His mercy that He gave His only Son so that we could be saved.
God’s wisdom is full of good fruits. We all know the fruit of the Spirit, which is the fruit from God. The fruit is Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-control. God shows us the perfect way to reflect these fruits to others through His wisdom.
God’s wisdom is unwavering. Unwavering in Greek is Adiakritos (ad-ee-ak’-ree-tos ) and it means without dubiousness, ambiguity or uncertainty. God’s wisdom is absolute. It will not mean one thing today and something else tomorrow.
And God’s wisdom is without hypocrisy. Hypocrisy is giving the appearance of being something which you are not. God doesn’t need to hide what He is. He desires all to see His true love for each and every person and He is not going to give you wisdom regarding something if He does not sincerely mean it. God’s word is sincere and true, reliable and unfailing, forever and always. Amen!
