Don’t Thicken Like Jello

The Lord has really put the word stagnant on my heart today. I found the word once in the Old Testament.

It will come about at that time That I will search Jerusalem with lamps, And I will punish the men who are stagnant in spirit, who say in their hearts, ‘The LORD will not do good or evil!’ Zephaniah 1:12

The Hebrew word for stagnant is Qapha’ (kaw-faw’) and it means to thicken, condense, congeal, settle, become dense; congelation

The scripture in Zephaniah, is referring to those people who question if the Lord will return, those who say it is in vain to serve God, those who say there is no God, or that God doesn’t care or take heed to the needy.

Now look more closely at the definition. It reflects a process. To thicken – it’s not something that started off thick, but became thick. Congeal means to change from a fluid to a solid state. Settle means to become fixed, resolved, or established. Congelation means to make rigid, fixed, or immobile.

Like Jell-O. It starts off as a runny fluid until it’s refrigerated and then it gets hard. People can be like that too. There can be many reasons why this comes about, but the one thing that is common in all of them is the fact that they did not trust in God to take care of their need and carry them through.

But that is why it is also important to surround yourself with friends that can encourage you and help you. Two of the first Bible verses I fell in love with are both in the book of Proverbs.

Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17

A man of too many friends comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24

Quality is much more important than quantity. Don’t take friends just to have friends, but take them because they are true to you. It is just as important that you are true to those people.

If you are surrounded by people who do not encourage you and help you stay focused on what is important when you are going through a difficult time, then you may become stagnant, your heart starts to harden. You put your heart in a lockbox and don’t share the love that God has given you with anyone else.
