Wisdom shouts in the street, she lifts her voice in the square; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the gates in the city she utters her sayings: “How long, O naïve ones, will you love being simple-minded? And scoffers delight themselves in scoffing and fools hate knowledge? Turn to my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you. Because I called and you refused, I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention; and you neglected all my counsel and did not want my reproof; I will also laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your dread comes, when your dread comes like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but they will not find me, because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord. They would not accept my counsel, they spurned all my reproof. So they shall eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices. For the waywardness of the naïve will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them. But he who listens to me shall live securely and will be at ease from the dread of evil.” Proverbs 1:20-33
The book of Proverbs is filled with wonderful wisdom and in the beginning of the book are these verses which say, do not turn away from wisdom, but accept it and welcome it. Let wisdom guide you. If you follow your way, you will never be satisfied and it will destroy you. But if you listen to the wisdom of the Lord, you will live securely and be at ease from the dread of evil.
When we accept the Lord, our Savior, we are given many things. We may never have the wisdom of Solomon, but the Lord will give us wisdom when we need it and ask for it, and we are given a Spirit to help guide us and direct us in what is right. But many people will scoff these gifts. They reject them, or they do not believe. Or they might even give Satan credit for the things which go wrong in their lives, they never consider that it is they themselves which are messing up.
The truth is, the word of the Lord says, the evil one can not touch us.
By lovingkindness and truth iniquity is atoned for, And by the fear of the LORD one keeps away from evil. Proverbs 16:6
The lovingkindness and truth is Jesus being sacrificed so we may have life. When we fear the Lord we are kept away from evil, we are protected. Fear of the Lord is not to be afraid of Him, but to revere Him, to show Him devoted honor.
The fear of the LORD leads to life, So that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil. Proverbs 19:23
When we fear the Lord we are given life and when we sleep (our flesh dies) we are not touched by evil, because we are headed to worship the Lord in heaven.
in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Ephesians 6:16
God gives us faith in order to stop the evil one from attacking us. The stronger our faith is, the stronger our shield is. But it is our responsibility to grow in faith, by coming closer to the Lord. We do this by learning his word and getting a deeper understanding of it. By praying and praising the Lord at all times, and by following the will of God.
But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. 2 Thessalonians 3:3
God will help strengthen us and protect us as we grow more and become more faithful. But we must choose to learn and grow, God will not force us to grow.
I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the Father. I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. 1 John 2:13-14
When we accept Jesus we overcome the evil one. We, at that moment in time, have defeated death and have life. The problem is many do not truly believe it. They may have the knowledge, but they do not have the belief and they will not grow closer to the Lord because of this disbelief. The truth is the Lord loves us so much He is willing to forgive us and He will not give up on us, but He will continue to guide us.
We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him. 1 John 5:18
We who are born of God, Satan does not touch us. Unless, of course, we allow it and give him permission.
So what exactly is this wonderful thing called wisdom?
Wisdom in Greek is Sophia (sof-ee’-ah). It means cleverness, skill; prudence, craft; knowledge; wisdom; philosophy.
Basically it means you carefully consider your actions and have sound judgment. When we lack in wisdom, the Lord will give us the answer we need if we just ask Him.
But here, we must be willing to accept the answer He gives us. It may not always be what we want it to be. It may even go exactly opposite of what we want, but we need to understand that the Lord knows the purpose He has called us for and we need to trust Him.
Trusting the Lord is difficult for many, because it means giving up something they are used to having – self will. We must be willing to let God guide us, instead of us trying to tell God where to go. Many have way too much pride to let God do all the driving, so we go through a learning process. Some will see the Lord guiding and they will follow, but there are some where the pride and self-sufficiency is so deep they blame Satan for the Lord’s chastisement and they never see that it is themselves that need to improve.
We should each wake up in the morning asking the Lord for guidance and for the eyes and ears to be opened to the Lord’s will in our life. And we should then be willing to accept the answer and follow it.
Lord, Father, we bow before your presence and humble our hearts before you. Thank you, Father, for accepting us as we are and for continuing to love us, even when we stumble. Thank you, Lord, for your guidance and your wisdom. Lord I ask that each person who reads this word, that you give them the peace of mind and open their hearts to receive your wisdom. You are awesome Lord and we love you. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
